Reflective material in motion gets the attention of vehicle drivers much faster than dark clothing will which is why reflective arm/ ankle  bands or reflective vests can save lives. When you are out walking  your dog, taking a quick bicycle ride or taking yourself out for a jog it  is imperative that you be seen by others who may be distracted. Yes, here in Tucson we have year-round sunshine there are some  days with clouds or our “liquid sunshine” (rain) plus those times when  dusk comes on faster than we plan. These times are when extra  visibility is vital.

Dark clothing, the lack of street lighting in many areas, distracted drivers all contribute to the rise in pedestrians getting hit by vehicles.

COMFORT

Most vests and shirts come in sizes to fit over street clothes for ease of use and are made in mesh material for cooling comfort. The very basic vest will not have pockets for phones or notebooks but they can be folded up into a small pack for storage.

Many safety vests include pockets of various sizes both on the inside and outside of the vest for the tools of trade. Or as some walkers tell me a safe place for the doggy treats.

The sizes range from small to up to 6XL though when you need 5 or 6XL it is best to call ahead and see if they are in stock.

Contoured fit for ladies is now more common as the industry is finally becoming aware of the woman in the workplace.

One lady that told me she had a close encounter one evening when walking to the nearby park wearing a vest when she heard brakes screeching behind her. The driver who was distracted someway looked up and saw her at the last moment to avoid hitting her walking on the side of the road.

Her neighbor who was the driver told her later that the reflective clothing was a factor in being seen.

COLORS

Reflective vests come in bright colors so you do not need to look like the construction workers seen every day. Now you can choose among the red, white, blue, green, yellow, pink, black, (yes black vests have reflective stripes) purple colors maybe to match your team or school colors. The purpose of colors is to identify for many organizations different job duties such as medical teams, security, HR staff, public relations or visitors.

REFLECTIVE MATERIAL

The reflective panels are sewn on or heat transferred for longevity and to last for many washes. Yes, you can wash a safety vest just hang it up to dry is recommended. The panels come in solid or patterns from the manufacturer and no they cannot be special ordered unless you are looking for thousands of each vest and then it’s not a guarantee that they will do that even then.
